If you have a friend or family member who is currently imprisoned, the best option to stay in touch is to use an inmate messaging application. These apps have been specifically created to meet prison regulations and allow family members and friends to send and receive messages, photos, eCards, video calls, and money into their trust account at the prison. In addition to these messaging apps, there are also a number of federal inmate apps which provide additional services such as video visitation and phone calls.
JPay for instance, allows friends and family members to transfer money directly into an inmate's trust account, as well as videos, emails, photos, and eCards. They can also create personalized postcards with personal photos. It's a safer and more secure alternative to postal mail.
Another popular app for texting prisoners is text inmate GettingOut. It allows "simple and safe communication" between inmates with their loved ones. The app is accessible at select correctional facilities that allow inmates to upload images and text messages to family members and friends using their tablets. Inmates pay $0.25 per message, and their loved ones pay data costs to access them (but there are no explicit images). You can also make use of the GettingOut application to share photos on Facebook or Foursquare and check in on Foursquare, and include a video in upload to YouTube upload.
